A Yuletide Fantasy Novel · Coming Late 2026
By Matt Newnham
On Christmas Eve, an ancient silver key hidden in her grandmother's attic opens a doorway in the heart of an old oak tree — and a world of eternal winter magic on the other side.
The Story
Seventeen-year-old Alice Winnter has always felt the pull of winter. On Christmas Eve, rummaging through her grandmother's attic, she finds it: a silver key, cold to the touch and strangely alive, humming with a power she cannot name.
Drawn by mysterious lights in the woods behind her home, Alice encounters Eryx — pale, storm-eyed, and achingly familiar, though they have never met. He calls her "Sweet Alice" and tells her the key has chosen her for something far greater than she understands.
Together, they step through a hidden doorway in an ancient oak tree into Yuletide — a realm of floating lanterns, enchanted forests, and eternal Christmas wonder. But beneath the beauty, shadows are spreading. An ancient gate is weakening. And Alice carries the only power that can seal it.
A quiet, snow-covered English town. Cobbled streets, frosted windows, and a grandmother's stories about doors that should never be opened.
A magical realm where Christmas lights glow eternally, lanterns drift through the air, frost sprites dance in the snow, and ancient winter magic breathes beneath the surface of wonder.
Strange living shadows seeping through cracks in an ancient gate. A balance between worlds weakening. A sealed power stirring — and a silence spreading where bells should ring.
Not simply magical. Alive. Connected to Alice's family past, to Eryx's secrets, and to the fate of everything beautiful left in Yuletide — if she can learn to trust what it asks of her.
"She had not expected the boy with storm-grey eyes, or the doorway carved into the heart of an ancient oak tree — a door that had always been there, always been waiting for her name."
The Players
Seventeen years old and quietly extraordinary. Alice has spent her life in a small English town half-believing her grandmother's stories about doorways and other worlds. She carries the Winter's Key — and a destiny she has barely begun to understand.
Pale, storm-grey-eyed, and far older than he appears. He calls Alice "Sweet Alice" as though he has known her name for centuries. Her guide through Yuletide — and its greatest mystery. His secrets are tied to the darkness spreading across the realm.
Alice's loyal friend. When she vanishes into the snowy woods on Christmas Eve, Jack follows glowing lights into the darkness after her — and unknowingly crosses the boundary between worlds himself, beginning his own dangerous journey through Yuletide.
The Realm
Where Christmas lights glow eternally, and magic breathes beneath every stone — but beauty and darkness are never far apart.
Lanterns drift through the air like fallen stars, lighting the cobbled streets of Yuletide's enchanted villages in warm amber gold.
Ancient creatures of ice and winter magic who dance in the snowfall, older even than the realm itself and the gate that seals it.
Snow-laden trees whose branches hold forgotten spells, and paths that shift with the intent of those who dare to walk them.
Living shadows seeping through cracks in an ancient gate once sealed by the Winter's Key. Silence spreading where bells once rang.
The Book
A cinematic young adult Christmas fantasy set between a quiet snow-covered English town and the magical realm of Yuletide — where Christmas lights glow eternally and ancient winter magic still survives beneath the surface of wonder.
Blending the warmth and nostalgia of Christmas with danger, mystery, and emotional depth. The feeling that behind every lantern-lit street or silent woodland path, another world might be waiting.
